Catechism starts at home

When the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God appeared to Sister Adele Brise in Champion, Wisconsin during 1859, Sister Adele asked Mary “What more can I do, dear Lady?” Mary’s response was simple, “Gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they should know for salvation.”

“But how shall I teach them who know so little myself?” Adele asked.

Mary replied, “Teach them their catechism, how to sign themselves with the sign of the Cross, and how to approach the sacraments; that is what I wish you to do. Go and fear nothing. I will help you.”

How can you share the Faith if you do not know the Faith? You cannot give what you do not have. In order to give love, you must have it. God is love and you must know, love, and serve him in order to give him. Teaching the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith goes beyond what we hear from the pulpit at Sunday Mass. It starts with ourselves and then teaching or instructing the one true faith to the ignorant, which is a spiritual work of mercy.

“They that instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity” (Dan. 12:3)
